The Challenges of IoT in Healthcare

At InfoSec Healthcare Connect (formerly CISO Healthcare Connect), we explore the risks that advancements in technology have created for health systems and health insurance agencies. Experts in the field, like Lisa Bazis of UNMC/Nebraska Medicine, come together to discuss challenges that they face in their organization and the strategies they use to overcome them.

Here's a sneak peek at what we'll talk about at InfoSec Healthcare Connect 2019:

How is the cybersecurity industry in a unique position when it comes to healthcare?

LB: The human element is what differentiates healthcare from other industries. As technology advances in healthcare, the need for immediate alerts and results from monitors and testing devices into the medical record is increasing. With increases in automation and information comes risk to human lives.

What major trend(s) in the space are you most looking forward to discussing with your peers?

LB: Biomedical devices and cloud integration. We're seeing more and more devices reporting to the cloud and then being ingested into our EMR.

How have evolutions in technology such as IoT brought additional challenges to your role?

LB: Medical devices and monitors are all becoming 'smart,' and because of this, our networks and patient information is more vulnerable. We need to address the vulnerabilities in relation to the physical harm they could cause a patient, in addition to disruptions to systems on the network.

Why is it so important for executives in this space to share with peers and maintain a collaborative attitude?

LB: Many times with emerging technologies, best practices are hard to identify. Speaking with peers in cybersecurity allows for a broader opinion of approaches and helps in comparing the results of others implementations.
